is this game safe

of course it is

how do you get past the intro (flickies are mysterious...)

There is a controller bug in v1.08 that may block your controls in that screen. Press F2 to restart the game and continue the saved game.

1.09 is coming really soon with a fix for that issue, sorry for the inconvenience!

(1 edit)

found a bug in Diamond Dust act 1 boss where when using Golden blast you can stay floating in a corner of the screen while damaging E-99 until its destruction.

not a complaint but its a bug what can i say

I'll look into it, thank you for reporting!

This game  looks really good and you've done a good job on it. The problem  is that when I download it and play  it, the background music doesn't play and there isn't a soundtrack file in the folder, either.

I checked the current download file and the zip file correctly contains the Data/Soundtrack folder with all the music tracks. Did you extract the zip file properly?

First up let me say this - you’ve done a bloody FANTASTIC job translating the environments, mechanics and overall experience from 3D to 2D. Absolutely amazing work! The work you’ve put into the game really shows and shines on through as a pure retro sonic experience (It honestly feels like I’m playing what I wanted Sonic 4 to be in my sega megadrive days!)

With that said, I do have a few points of feedback in terms of improvements and/or critique that, in my experience, lets the game down a little.

Boss difficulty curve seems a little erratic. It seems that I had quite a bit of trouble on Green Grove act 2 boss more than I did with the following act 2 bosses, simply because of a few things, notably the horizontal speed of the ball (this was eventually learned, after a game over, but it feels way too difficult for new players and more importantly the first main boss in the game) and robotnik’s i-frames catching the player out of Sonic’s natural “bounce” on bosses - I feel this shouldn’t punish the player in terms of loss of rings/death, but something less punishing like have Sonic bounce away similar to future bosses as the current method takes away something players do naturally.

Foreground/background assets and hazards - sometimes it’s almost impossible to see a set of spikes for example. Diamond Dust act 1 had various places where the spikes would be completely camouflaged in front of the background tiles, making this purely unfair - not difficult.

The Special stages - Yes, this has been brought up a lot (and for good reason). I understand your vision that they’re supposed to be difficult and that the reward is something overpowered that practically “breaks” the game but the bonus stages are teetering more on being unfair than difficult - it’s easy when you know the patterns and have designed them but when you need extremely quick reaction times coupled with the ‘slippy’ controls in them stages, it makes for an infuriating experience. A couple suggestions that may lighten up the experience without removing the “difficulty” could be tightening up the momentum a little or slowing the rings down slightly (but adding more to the quota/having less rings appear).

Quick boss attacks - Things like the Diamond Dust act 1 boss. I notice this has been brought up a fair bit too, and as I understand the pattern and get that the idea is to avoid the lasers as they lock on to your position, the execution requires very fast reactions whilst also trying to figure out when it’s going to shoot - a recipe that is yet again, infuriating. A simple tell when the boss is about to shoot would work wonders (just a sprite flash followed by the shoot or something) and gives the player a fair warning when to dodge that incoming swift laser.

Again, I absolutely appreciate the effort you’ve put in this game, it’s probably one of the best fan games I’ve ever played. The passion and love you’ve obviously put into it is crystal clear and without a shadow of a doubt I’d recommend this to any sonic fan! If it weren’t for a few small bits that I mentioned above this would be a solid 10/10 for me!

Awesome work.

I feel like the rings and bombs in the special stages go by way to fast for me to react to it.

I think you've missed a trick here not calling this "Sonic 2D Blast"

I've wanted someone to do this concept for a while, and I'm very happy to stumble upon this. Gonna give it a try now.

(+1)

There's already a ROM hack called Sonic 2D Blast.

I made a mod for this fangame , if you want to download it enter here xD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdPp0w6p778

I gave the game a second go. Have to say, my impressions are much better. There are some things I still don't agree with but the game is soild. Even got all the emeralds on stream. Made a post talking about 1.08 :3

Great to see you gave the game a second chance. Will you unlock all of the extra characters?

Maybe ^^

I'm unable to play this I've tried the "fix" that didn't work even made it run on my GPU and still it runs like it's being played underwater is there a actual fix for this?

Thanks.

(1 edit)

For some reason I can't get the last 2 emeralds as Wechnia, the special rings don't work at all. Is this normal?

No it's not. What is the problem exactly? The big rings are missing or they don't warp when you touch them?

Does this problem persist if you reload the game?

They don't warp, and yes, the problem does persist even if i reload the game no matter what.

I'm sorry, but I cannot replicate the problem on my end. Can you please copy your "save" file inside the game's Data folder and upload it to dropbox or mega so that I can have a look at it?

Here you go: https://www.dropbox.com/s/vqjub7dk7bg0rkr/Save?dl=0

Thanks, I'll look into it and let you know.

I've been really enjoying this game so far - the level design has been entertaining and the Act 1 bosses for each area have generally been fun ideas. I particularly enjoyed Gene Gadget. Right now I'm stuck on the Panic Puppet Act 1 boss, which is... troublesome... but perhaps I'll eventually get around to completing it. Flying segments are always really rough...

I have a few suggestions:

- For the switch in Gene Gadget Act 1, it might more clearly convey how it works if it played sound effects to indicate it was on a timer, akin to Sandopolis zone's grind blocks. I couldn't figure it out and had to time out for one death because I wasn't sure if I missed a pathway or something.

- For Panic Puppet zone Act 1, I feel like it might be served by a mild timer extension of some sort: I enjoy the level design, but feel like I'm forced to rush through and ignore it all by the fact that the fight takes so long to do.

Anyway, so far, really enjoying it!

Hi,

When you're talking about a "Window link", do you mean a Symblink ?

'cause I don't see where can I put the command in a Symblink when I Right click on it to go to Properties. Everything is grey, can't modify.

Thanks

he means make a shortcut

KaiserinRei is correct. I'll update the troubleshooting text with "shortcut" instead of "link". Sorry for the confusion!

this is normal? the water is weird but the game is awesome

Wow, no, it's not normal! Not sure what causes that magnifying effect for you. Try to run the game with /LIGHTWATER (see troubleshooting above)

Thanks that fix my error and i have a idea can you add saturn ost?

You can actually change your music. I have a mix of Saturn and genesis music on my verison. Just download the Saturn music and rename it the same file EXACTLY the same file you wanna replace then just switch the file.

Ex: original- 1. GGZ genesis verison. If you want the saturn verison just take that file and name it the same as above then switch it

This is a bit of a late reply, but V1.09 introduced the Saturn option as additional DLC. That will take care of loops for the music as well.

I seem to get stuck on the screen with the flickies when I click new game?

Sorry for the inconvenience: it's a bug with that particular screen related to the new pause system, it will be addressed with 1.09. There is a chance the game loses controls focus in that particular screen.

For now you can start a game, reset with F2 in the flicky screen and then continue the saved game.

(1 edit) (+1)

Will the sega saturn music be in 1.09?

You can actually change your music. I have a mix of Saturn and genesis music on my verison. Just down load the Saturn music and rename it the same file EXACTLY the same file you wanna replace then just switch the file.

(SPOILER FOR WHO DOSENT PLAYED IT)

Well i made this account so i can give some feedback:

I loved this fangame , all the Sonic lore put into it , like Tails Doll , that Chaos mural , that Extra Final Boss with the Pocket Adventure Mech , etc all of that is awesome =)

now , the feedback , to improve this project :D

-Enemies in middle of a Speed Section , that ruins the speed felling and make you just jump to avoid possible badnicks and not going fast as you supposed to do

-Panic Puppet Zone and Gene Gadget Zone are little annoying to play , they are like a giant maze and in a Sonic game that dosent work , Sonic games are fast , not maze like

-Panic Puppet Zone ACT 1 Boss , the machine with the capsule inside is fun to play , but that Eggman part is so hard that i took 3 days to defeat , a lot of lifes and patience losed on that fight , also , if get hit you can take any ring back , also , Tails moves to slow when fliying , please fix it or at least disable the Eggman part bc i beyond annoying xD

-Panic Puppet Zone ACT 2 Boss , is cool , the 1st part is beyond difficult , you barely have time to think

the 2nd part is good , but the time you have to hit him is too short

the 3rd part is great , no need to change

-The Special Stages , god , they are imposibleeee , i cant get the Emeralds without Cheat Engine , i would rather use the S3&K special stages than the Sonic 2 ones

-E99 Boss , he just spams bombs and laser shoots you like a maniac , you barely have time to react or hit him without getting hit

-Gene Gadget Zone ACT 2 Boss , Please Nerf that Homming attack Little bastard xD , he is to fast for the player to react

Well , that was my experience with this fangame , i have to say , if we improved it with this feedback and the other user feedbacks this fangame can shine very good , it already shines for me xD

also if you reading this and need a digital artist you can talk to me and i can provide some digital art =)

What is the minimal system requirements?

Is the game based on own engine or it`s 16-bit Sega emulation system ?

(+1)

I tested the game on windows 7 on a core i7 from 2012 and had no issues at all. Anything newer than that should have no problems running the game.

The game uses an customized Sonic Worlds Engine on Fusion 2.5.

Played the 1.08 version, just finished, maybe a few tips to improve

First, The Insta Shield, it works nicely but it lacks just that "invincibility-frame" that made it so special on S3&K, it allowed you to kill these spikey enemies and dodge damage , here on this game seeing how difficult it is, I please beg you, to add that , it is completely unfair sometimes

General Level Design: Sonic CD had that problem where if you went fast, a enemy was waiting and then you just got hit by it, same here, happens waaaaaay a lot, maybe even a Stage Hazard sometimes.

The Special Stages, the biggest bruh , can't make it, I got the first one legit and then the rest I couldn't, i had to resort to Cheat Engine to get the 7 emeralds, otherwise it wouldn't have been possible

Gene Gadget Act 1 and 2 are a super maze, the fact you can actually move through tubes on Act 1 was something it took me a while to figure out, the first act boss fight, is just extra difficult, worth of being a final boss honestly restarted the stage just to gring Rings and Super Sonic it out, else impossible, maybe add 1 ring after defeating of them? or make it so they spawn over time. The Act 2 boss was alright though

Panic Puppet Act 1: Insane maze, took me 8 minutes to reach the boss and i couldn't kill it due to a time over, had to consume a extra life for it to reset, now the Act 1 boss, Horrible beyond Horrible, i get the idea but, it's just so darn difficult, being hit once just renders you useless as the rings just fall off and tails movement is slow, and to make it worse, there's a second phase, which is even more unfair due to the plus that tails moves slow, and robotnik can just, appear from the bottom side or top side, maybe restrict it to being only left and right, or just add over time a ring that shows up so you have a chance, more than that, i see that boss to being improved, I legit had to reset the stage just to grab rings and Super Sonic it out.

Panic Puppet Act 2: was alright, fun to explore, the first phase of the boss really meme, hits you a lot, maybe add a delay after they stomp? most of the times i just got hit after hitting the boss, which was meh, took me a few tries, the second phase, just add more time to hit the blue orbs pls, third phase was alright

The Final Fight: 3 minute boss , really easy tbh, just time consuming like the original one, dying here and on the post fight is just... eehhhh, since you have to repeat that over again and it's just frustration at that point.

Extra Boss: what if we got more rings ? , I spammed the Boost because I got a vibe from S3&K, though it consumed rings so I found myself in a weird spot and then died, The Character's movement seem slow too, but overall a fun fight and a nice touch to the end of the game.

That's all my rant of the game, hope seeing it improve.

I really really want to enjoy this game, but the music wont play at all, and theres no options menu to do anything about it. It's not unplayable, but it completely ruins the experience and pushes me away from playing the game

The music should play automatically. Can you listen to the music if you open the files in the soundtrack folder directly?

Yeah, I can listen to the music in the data folder, but for some reason it just doesnt play ingame

I'm not sure what could cause such an issue.

What about the regular sound effects, can you hear them?

Finally! A version of Sonic 3D Blast I can actually tollerate

Is it possible to run this on a mac? This game looks really amazing and i'd like to try it out!

The only way I know that would possibly work would be to somehow get Wine installed or to use a virtual machine with Windows as the guest.

Well, I got wine installed and everything working perfectly, sadly the game crashes after inputing the "start" for control configuration.

I don't know how or why this happens, or how to fix it, and I doubt it can be fixed since I'm running 10.13 High Sierra version of MacOS, which is a pretty old version. If there is a fix for this please let me know!

(+1)

this game was fun to play but difficult. im probably bad at sonic games, but this one felt tougher than others. not necessarily a bad thing, but it was noticeable. everything else was great, graphics, music, etc. kudos for the continuous development and frequent updates!

(1 edit) (+3)(-1)

Probably been suggested before, but might I suggest the choice of soundtracks like what was done for the newest PC release of Sonic CD?  Alternative sound effects and little jingles not included of course, just stage music.

PS - I cannot state how well this is done and how happy this made me to see and play.  Please keep going, I wanna see where else this could go.

(+1)(-6)

This fan game has some of the most bullshit bosses and level design I've ever played in a sonic game.

(+1)

I have played only the 1.04 version so far, but since I have not seen any comment about it, I would point out a bug that happens just after defeating the sub boss of Diamond Dust Zone. The boss keeps exploding and throwing lasers and bombs indefinitely, and the player must either wait for a time over or kill itself. That has happened to me twice, and in both occasions I had defeated the boss very quickly with super characters. Sorry if it has been addressed already. Anyway, wonderful game! I'm looking forward for more!

Hello, thank you for playing! That bug has been fixed as of 1.08.

One of its coding routines had a chance to get activated at the same instant it died.

(+3)

Can you make a version with the Sega Saturn music

(+2)

ok. so, I just had a close friend play the game who was significantly better at 2d sonic games and he had gotten further than i had gotten, but even he admitted the same problems. invincibility damage frames should take a bit longer, and the special stages are still very hard, but it is still a really really fun game to play

(1 edit) (+2)

agree with u on invincibility time. it is a bit shorter than usual

you can also make a remake of the sonic 2 master system (like - sonic 2 8 bit in 16 bit) with an engine based on mania.you can think of cool things to add.

what would spring twirl look like in this remake?(you can test to see if are good or not

Nicely done

(4 edits) (+1)

Hey, just wanted to say thank you for making this wonderful game! I'm going to play through it soon.

Also, for any Linux users out there I was able to get it to start using Lutris with the following settings under Arch Linux (KDE DE) on my Librem 15 laptop:

  1. Wine version: lutris-5.7-x86_64
  2. DXVK off. (otherwise would crash immediately after launch)
  3. Used winetricks to install vcrun6. (otherwise crash after input setup)
  4. Set up separate wineprefix to keep things clean.

With these settings got through the first zone. Will test and report back with any issues.

Edit: Game version 1.07, also did not test gamepad input, just keyboard.

Edit#2: Tested an 8-bit do SN30 Pro+ gamepad (FW 4.01) connected through onboard bluetooth using Nintendo Switch mode (Y+START to turn on gamepad). Worked with no problem mapping buttons.

Edit#3: Game works in either fullscreen or windowed mode. Was a bit laggy when maximized in windowed, but the Librem only has Intel HD Graphics 620, so a dedicated card would likely perform better. Did crash after switching between full and window a few times during gameplay. Left screen with low resolution after crash. Configure -> System options -> Restore resolution on exit in Lutris settings made the original resolution return the next time it crashed. So, just be careful toggling between the screen modes.

(1 edit) (+1)

Thank you for playing, and also for finding a setup for it to work on a Linux System! With your permission I'll put those steps into the troubleshooting section of the game pages.

Sure, that will be fine. If I find any bugs or other issues I will let you know.

Hello! I have already commented here but this time is something else, when you connect my ps4 control the game takes a long time to load things, it is a bit annoying,¿ I wonder if this only happens to me or is it part of the game?

PS: I have version 1.07 and I am a bit disappointed

It's a side effect of the new start function that may happen on windows 10 systems when a controller is connected.

You'll be able to revert to the Fusion pause when 1.08 hits if that bothers you.

thanks for answering, I'll wait for 1.08 then

1.08 is out! Use a link with a command line /OLDPAUSE to play with the old pause system (You will have to press ENTER to unpause the game)

This sounds silly, but how do I activate it? I have been seeing but I cannot find the way to put such a command

(1 edit)
  • Create a windows link to the game
  • Right click on the link and select "Properties"
  • Look for the "Destination" field, it contains the path of the application ("C:\BLAH BLA BLAH\Sonic3D2d 1.08.exe")
  • Add the commands you want after the double quotes, separated by space ("C:\BLAH BLA BLAH\Sonic3D2d 1.08.exe" /MIS1 /OLDPAUSE /LIGHTWATER)
  • Play the game from that link

You may still get slowdowns when levels load and you use a controller: it's windows 10's fault that for reasons out of my control takes a long time to load the controller's routines into the game's joystick controls.

I already have the version corresponding to my pc installed, all good the first few days but today when I tried to pass the game on with amy, the water thing happened again and changed to another character but my pc is still Windows 7, and I was wondering if it can remove dependency from directX
(1 edit)

I can't remove directX dependancy from the game, all transparency effects in the game rely on it...

Do you have this water problem with Amy only? It seems really odd...

No, all characters

(1 edit)

I can delete the textures of the Water?

(2 edits)

The water has no textures...it's a custom DirectX effect that draws the deformed background on the water box.

I'm sorry, but at the moment I have no idea what can cause that problem on your end.

EDIT: I'm working on a compatibility option to use a simpler water effect. That may solve your issue once 1.08 will release.

Version 1.08 is out, try to make a link with the command line /LIGHTWATER (see the troubleshooting section above on the steps to do it)

(+1)

the special stage is too fast ...

a good name for the game : Sonic Flickies Island

I already have the version corresponding to my pc installed, all good the first few days but today when I tried to pass the game on with amy, the water thing happened again and changed to another character but my pc is still Windows 7, and I was wondering if it can remove dependency from directX

I installed the latest update but my game is now running slower.

I had to add two more processes to have a fully working pause button, that probably introduced some slowdown on some systems...

Did you try to use the /MIS1 mode as well? (check troubleshooting above)

Yes, it still runs slow on that mode.

(+1)

I'll figure out a way to put an option to enable the old pause system in version 1.08.

You will be forced to un-pause with enter, but you will not have the slowdown caused by the new pause process.

Alright, thank you!

i tried to download but it said invalid upload

Can you retry? I just downloaded from Itch without any issues

(1 edit) (+1)

I think the best way to make this game significantly more enjoyable is to tone down some enemy spots. Some hits felt very cheap. I went up a ramp and ram into some spikes on the roof. That is very cheap for an attack. It makes things feel unfair. My speed was rewarded with a practically unavoidable hit, losing all of my rings. I think there are two perfect ways to avoid getting upset. Make invincibility frames last a second or two longer, and when you take damage only lose a certain number of rings. It's perfectly fine to make levels more difficult than the common type, but you should implement  attributes to make it not feel as aggravating... I'm not saying that this is god awful, like other reviews I've read. This is an awesome re-imagining of Sonic 3D Blast and I have genuine respect for its idea and the talent given to it. If this game had some polish and focus, I'm sure it will be a phenomenal game.

Pros

  • animation
  • quality
  • sprites
  • music
  • some act layouts
  • bubble shields
  • MOST enemy placement
  • you get chaos emeralds from mini-bosses
  • game play consistency (the depictions of the levels stay faithful to the original Acts)

Cons

  • invincibility frames are too short.
  • Special Stages are unplayable for me (rings pass by way too fast)
  • SOME enemy placement and spikes
  • elemental bubbles give no effect to Tails and Knuckles (but that's honestly excusable, since S3&K had the same problem)
  • Small minor glitches (that I'm sure will get patched up on later updates)

All in all, I enjoy the game, I just hope some things get polished.

 7/10 for version 1.06.

Deleted 4 years ago

At the minute 0:49 there is a trampoline down. I hope I've helped

(3 edits)

Noahd, you're doing it wrong, you don't need to charge to the other side. You have to go slow and use the spring at the base the statue is pointing at 0:49.

Knuckles knows the way, and Dustin knows it too! XD

OK! lol I'm a fuggin idiot. i figured those bounce pads were for backtracking but I is an OOpSy!! Still think the level are just a tad over-saturated with enemies

I don't think there's too many enemies... as an example the normal path of Rusty Ruins Zone 2 from start to the boss has exactly 10 enemies, and there's 32 in total that you meet only if you explore the the entire level.

agreed with you here
